Interview: Hooby And The Yabbit

We recently had the opportunity to chat to a bunch of bands from the Rogue PR label. Our latest one was with Ian Hawkins, singer/songwriter of blues-rock trio Hooby and The Yabbit from Wakefield where we learned about their new album, forthcoming tour and music with ‘eyebrows.’

Interview by Jane Howkins

How is 2019 treating you so far?
Haven’t had time to check really – we’re all still here aren’t we? So, must be going okay. Right?

Have you released any music so far this year? If so, what can you tell us about that?
Out of Time is the current release, a four track original blues rock thing. It’s out on Bandcamp and you can stream it online in all the usual places.

Are you working on any new music at the moment? What are you working on, and when will it be released?
There’s going to be an album this year, possibly two, one of which might be acoustic. We’re recording and mixing at the minute, so watch this space.

Have you got any upcoming tours planned? If so, where are you playing and where are you looking forward to going most?
UK and northern Europe in the autumn I hope. Follow our Facebook page for updates.

Who/what has influenced you the most as musicians?
Me personally? Absolutely everything really, but I like stuff that has ‘eyebrows’ on it like Frank Zappa used to say.

What have you been listening to recently that you can recommend to our readers?
Hamilton, the musical, and I love old blues music. Iggy Pop is great touring music. I found a great live album of his while I was touring in Spain recently.

Why do you think people should pick up one of your records or come and see you live, and what can people expect from one of your shows?
This record is a late night listener, I think. Have a drink, a smoke, and turn the lights down. The shows are about having a good time, drinking, and dancing. Rock, rhythm and blues, covers and originals.

Any last words for the fans?
Whatever you want to do, do it. It’s always the right thing to do.
