Last night local young talent Kitty VR released her debut EP to the world with a launch party at The Crescent. The EP and concert had been years in the making so a huge crowd had turned up to celebrate. Support on the night came from Laura Kindelan and Matthew Sturgess.

Opening the night was singer-songwriter Laura Kindelan. It’s been almost three years since we last caught Laura live and since then she’s been busy adding to her set list so that we were treated to a few new songs. Laura’s always had a wisdom beyond her years in her songwriting but it was good to also see her voice and style develop with a clear grounding in a jazzy style, complete with a bit of playful scatting. She closed her set with a new track Toxic, which was lively and filled the room with sound. It was great to catch up again with an old favourite artist of ours.
Up next was Matthew Sturgess who also performs under the name The Silver Reserve. Matthew had a sweet voice and a quick wit as he treated The Crescent to a set of folksy, Bon Iver-esque acoustic ballads. Matthew’s performance was full of genuineness and his lyrics full of the dark realities of life. Near the end of the set he added a richness to this sound through the use of a loop pedal, layering his vocals as well as his guitar to create an echoing melancholy.
Then the lights dimmed and the room was full of anticipation for the main event: Kitty VR. Complete with band, Kitty cast of the constraints of a solo acoustic performance to deliver a psychadelic and dreamy ensemble performance.
Though the night was to celebrate the launch of her long-awaited EP, there was enough time in the set to deliver a couple of covers. First it was a sultry version Erykah Badu’s On and On and then Portishead’s Glory Box to set up the encore. But the biggest reaction of the night from the crowd was reserved for Kitty’s own track and single Whirlpool.
It’s great to see another young local talent coming to the fore and last night at The Crescent really was a special night. We wish Kitty all the best with her EP.
