We The People are an American jazz outfit from Kansas City, Missouri. Their new track Misunderstood combines infectious melody with improvisation to great effect.
By Graeme Smith
Starting with an isolated bass line which warps into a heartbeat, a vocal sample fades it and fades out almost as instantly. Guitar and drums join in, creating a galloping rhythm while a looping melody defines the piece.
As the track hits its second minute, there is a controlled free-fall. Each instruments starts into the creative improvisation for which jazz is known before a final refrain of that catchy melody closes things out.
Misunderstood is funky, interesting and memorable – a great introduction to We The People for us. You can check it out below.
