Michael C. Duguay is a Canadian indie folk artist whose country style and way with words caught my attention in new video Summer Fights.
By Graeme Smith
On the face of it, Summer Fights feels a simple and traditional ditty. A long, folky intro feels familiar and it’s only when Michael’s vocals fade in that the track begins to stand out. His lyrics are rich with imagery and ripe with understated tension. The obvious comparison for me was Conor Oberst in the way that they both take the everyday and turn it into something profound.
The video, shot during lockdown, paints a picture of the rural and the mundane. Summer Fights is the first single from Michael’s upcoming album The Winter of Our Discotheque. You can check it out below.
