Juni Habel is a Norwegian Americana artist whose new track Surrendering is saturated with imagery and folk sensibilities.
By Graeme Smith
The ‘surrendering’ in the title refers to embracing creativity and letting go of the fear that comes from attempting to make something new. It really captures the intimacy that artists feels for their art and the reluctance to share it. There’s a restrained energy in the verses that is shrugged off in the soaring choruses where Juni’s bright, folksy vocals are at their most profound.
There are beautifully twee moments in the lyrics – secret tunes, water flowing, walking in the snow – that anchor this abstract concept in the real world and that’s what impressed me most about Juni’s music.
