James Goldsmith is a British neoclassical composer whose lockdown project saw him compose pieces based on the photography of O. Winston Link. His latest composition from the project is called Trains That Passed In The Night.
By Graeme Smith
James does a fantastic job setting the atmosphere in this piece. A repetitive piano melody takes the role of a train, trundling slowly and persistently along the track. Poured onto this are flourishes of melody before the piano meets the strings of a cello coming the other way. There is a dark, sombre feel to proceedings with a touch of hope and hint of mystery.
Alongside his solo projects, James is also a member of the group BirdyHop. You can hear Trains That Passed In The Night below.
