Forty Below is the exceptional new track from American stream-of-consciousness rapper Voice Monet.
By Graeme Smith
The track feels like a memoir in verse. Memories merge with religious imagery and social commentary. Voice Monet’s verses are relentless, flowing like a river over a steady beat. It’s very much in the tradition of ’90s hip hop and draws comparisons with Snoop Dogg and Lauren Hill.
Voice Monet is a remarkable artist who has done it all. As a child she was an actress. In college she studied the visual arts and there took up slam poetry. From there rap seems a natural progression but she’s also a skilled jazz trumpeter and has been a chef in New Orleans.
When Forty Below came across my desk, I simply knew I had to share it. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. Check it out below.
