Regular readers will know that I’ve shared music from British neoclassical composer Gifts From Crows (real name Richard Laurence) before. His ability to drive narrative from minimal composition is impressive and he hasn’t lost it with new track Without Beauty There’s No Hope.
By Graeme Smith
The piece layers strings onto piano – the two interplaying in ever-changing ways, invoking a winding path with new sights around each corner. The soundscape is lush and inviting. It’s a great world into which you can get lost.
For the video, Richard collaborated with choreographer Kristine Berget who provide a visual interpretation through dance. The grainy visual effects belies the fact that the entire video was shot on an iPhone and the cinematic editing by Corey Rid gives the visual a narrative of its own.
