Ryan Cassata is an artist that we first featured on this blog back in 2018 through his track Daughter which has always stuck with me. So I was pleased when I saw he had a new one out. It’s called I Met Jesus at the Gay Pride Parade.
By Graeme Smith
As you might have guessed from the title, the track is an exploration of the two sides of Christianity – the universal love that preached by some Christians and the bigotry that comes from others. Ryan was born into a female body and transitioned later in life but always held onto his faith, even when he saw other Christians using Christ as a reason to hate.
The authenticity of Ryan’s story in I Met Jesus at the Gay Pride Parade is what makes it so compelling. The song is made concrete with detail and peopled with genuine characters. Most importantly, the message is uplifting.
Fans of Conor Oberst and Bright Eyes will find a lot to love in Ryan’s music. Check out I Met Jesus at the Gay Pride Parade below.
