Ever so often I hear a piece of music with which I instantly connect. The latest example is Electric Pow Wow Drum by American neoclassical outfit Attacca Quartet. It’s energy had me hooked for the first bar.

Though Attacca Quartet are a string collective, their music doesn’t conform to any template of neoclassical music I’ve heard before. In their rendition of Electric Pow Wow Drum (originally recorded by The Halluci Nation) the playing is urgent, there is a stomping drum beat, electric guitar riffs and a fresh, modern sheen on everything. The whole piece feels like a march, but to a destination unknown.

The track is taken from the Brooklyn band’s debut LP Real Life which is set to be released on 9 July. I can’t wait to hear more from them. Check out the psychedelic animated video for Electric Pow Wow Drum below.
