Jane Mathew is a Toronto-based Omani-Canadian singer songwriter whose bright and emotive new track No-One caught my ear.
By Graeme Smith
Jane’s music is ukulele-lead. It’s a beautiful instrument but often creates a sound that is a little kitsch and lightweight. Not so here. Jane’s ukulele is accompanied by a sweeping instrumental arrangement including drums, guitar and piano which gives it a heavy sense of presence. Jane’s vocals are beautifully charismatic, speaking directly to the listener.
In a fairy-tale story, Jane got her break as a musician busking on the Toronto subway. It was here that JUNO award winning producer Bob Wiseman heard her music and offered to work with her. Bob isn’t the producer on this track, but it was the encounter that helped Jane move to the next stage of her career. I suspect it will be a long one with such an engaging sound.
