It’s been awhile since we last had a big anthem that celebrates the English football team. I can’t be the only one a little tired of hearing Baddiel, Skinner and The Lightning Seeds singing Three Lions. Enter drill duo Krept & Konan to deliver an anthem for modern Britain, Olé.
By Graeme Smith
Lyrically, Olé sticks to the pitch, with the odd diversion to the kind of subject matter you usually get from UK hip hop. Yet, there’s an undercurrent of the political to the track and the video. It’s filmed mostly outside of Wembley Stadium, but the burned out Grenfell Tower makes an appearance early on and the cast represents the multi-cultural melting pot that is London. It feels like a prideful counterpoint to those who might boo English players for taking the knee before a match.
Joining Krept and Konan are fellow rappers S1lva, Morrison and M1llionz, all delivering verses in their own unique style.
Check out the video below. Fair warning, the hook will get stuck in your head.
