Liverpool lo-fi indie folk quartet CLEAN CUT KID are delighted to announce that their fourth album, titled Hiss, will be released in 2022 on new independent label home Alcopop! Records—the band have also signed to Team Love Records for the album’s US release.
Alongside the album news, the band are proud to reveal lead single Heavy As, which is set for release on 18th August 2021 on all good digital service providers.
To celebrate their return, the four piece are also pleased to announce a fresh run of winter 2021 UK headline tour dates, with tickets on sale 20th August 2021.
A tender reflection on fatherhood, love, and the importance of celebrating life and seizing the day, the new single was inspired by front man Mike Hall’s dad.
Commenting on the origins of the single, Mike says: “Me and my dad are standing on my balcony overlooking Liverpool after a night out together. He takes a drag on his cigarette and says: ‘Imagine you make this tiny baby who’s so premature he fights to stay alive for weeks. Then one day you buy that kid a guitar, and watch him get better and better. Then you go to his graduation, see him marry the love of his life, sign a record deal and play a sold out Royal Albert Hall. And now you’re standing in a flat he bought from writing songs…sounds heavy doesn’t it?’ he says, taking another drag, ‘…it’s not!’. That night after he fell asleep I wrote this song.”
Earlier this year, in June 2021, the band celebrated signing to Alcopop! Records and Team Love with a long-awaited digital release of their previously physical-only third album Mother’s Milk, which has racked up over 300,000 streams on Spotify in just a month. Recorded straight to tape in their Liverpool studio Deadroom, and finished in Nashville (on a trip booked after a visitation from the ghost of Johnny Cash), Mother’s Milk dove deep into family, love and loss.
The band subsequently released a short documentary film titled Curdled: The Mother’s Milk Story with footage of the recording sessions and forced halt of plans for touring/release due to COVID.
In July 2021 the quartet were one of the first musical acts back on the road, as they set out on a triumphant run of rescheduled socially-distanced UK headline tour dates in support of the record, with many dates either sold out or upgraded, and were supported by keys player Evelyn Halls’ solo project Pet Snake.
Clean Cut Kid will be revealing further details of the new album and live dates over the coming months.
They will perform at Yellow Arch Studios in Sheffield on 30th November and the Brudenell Social Club in Leeds on 2nd December 2021.
