Established in 2014, Say Owt are York’s loveable gang of performance poets. They host high-energy nights of words and verse. The last Say Owt Slam was held in February 2020 in ‘the before times’, and they are chomping at the bit to get back on stage.
A slam features a selection of brilliant poets each with 3 minutes to wow the audience. Randomly selected judges will give a score from 1-10 and the highest scored poet will be crowned a Slam Champion! Of course, the point isn’t the point, the point is the poetry and a cracking night out.
Say Owt Slams have been praised as raucous evenings of cheering, laughter and even a few tears. They are high energy events perfect for a Saturday night out. We were Highly Commended in York Culture Awards, and One&Other called us a “York poetry powerhouse”.
Guesting at Say Owt Slam is Malaika Kegode. Malaika is a writer, performer and producer based in Bristol. She has appeared on stages at a number of festivals and literary events including WOMAD and Edinburgh Book Festival. She has published two poetry collections with Burning Eye Books, and recently created Outlier, an autobiographical gig-theatre with prog-rock band Jakabol. She is passionate about writing on the themes of cinema, culture and race. Her work is inventive and lyrical, taking the audience on a journey through lives and loves exploring genre, form and the power of the written word made visual.
This is Say Owt’s first slam at The Crescent.
