Discovery: Groan Room

Groan Room are a Manchester-based alternative rock band who, as a fan of early Modest Mouse, caught my attention. Their latest track is called Greasy Thumbs.

The comparison to Modest Mouse for me comes from the twanging guitar, melancholic feel and storytelling lyrics. That’s perhaps where the similarities end, with Groan Room very much having a sense of Northern England about their sound. The lyrics feel distinctly British and the explosions of guitar in the chorus take their cue from ’90s Britpop.

The band describe Greasy Thumbs as an “unusually happy” song for them, speaking of being content in a relationship and the joy that comes with having a companion. On this evidence, I think they should write more happy ones. You can check out Greasy Thumbs below.
