Lee Smythe is an American singer songwriter who doesn’t like to confine himself to a particular genre. It was his latest experimentation with country that caught my attention. It’s called Cigarettes.

And country feels like the right choice for this meditation on the foibles of humanity. The track opens with a jaunty acoustic guitar melody before bass plods in. Lee’s vocals are expressive and compelling as he tells his tale of struggling to quit smoking. As the track progresses, the story becomes more universal, exploring all the things that collectively hold us back.
Cigarettes is a delightful introduction to an artist who I’m looking forward to hearing more from. You can give it a listen below.
