Silverstein are a band that have been going for years now, getting better and better each time I hear their music. They’ve recently been releasing a few singles, so I decided to have a chat with Shane Told to find out a little more.
By Jane Howkins
You recently released a new song titled Die Alone. What can you tell us about the track?
It’s the heaviest song we’ve ever done. And yes I mean it. It’s low, fast, distorted, feedback-y, features vocals from Andrew from Comeback Kid AND Leonardo DiCaprio. Very excited.
The song featured Andrew Neufeld from Comeback Kid. How did the collaboration come about? Do you want to collaborate more in future?
We’re very old friends! Obviously CBK has been a staple of the Canadian punk scene forever. We first toured together in 2007 and Billy used to be roommates with their former singer Scott. So when this song took shape we heard Andrew on it immediately. And as for the future – I’d love it. Maybe have Andrew do clean singing. He has a phenomenal tone.
Do you have any more singles planned for release anytime soon?
We just dropped Live Like This – but now it’s album time baby! So excited to share the entire thing.
You also have a new album coming out in May, titled Misery Made Me. Are you excited? What can you tell us about the album?
It’s our 10th and greatest album. It’s dark. Angry. It has some experimental vibes but it’s also chock full of bangers. It’s a lot more dynamic and interesting than the last album. I can’t wait!
What is the writing and recording process like for you?
Every single song is different. You can paint anything with the same brush, especially in our band. We have so much diversity within our music. So whether something stems from a riff, a lyric, a drum part… you have to nurture that song. Recording was the same. We didn’t record all the instruments at once. We did a song or 2 at a time and finished them, then moved onto the next. It was great to be focused on each one rather than trying to record guitars for 12 songs in a row.
What is the secret to your longevity, considering the current state of the music industry?
I think we are very adaptable to all the new things coming out. The new technologies. And we have really just formed a great foundation with our fan base. We get along well. We respect each other. We don’t burn bridges. We work with people smarter than us. These are all important things.
You’re performing at Slam Dunk Festival this year. Will you be doing anything special?
We are going HARD! We are hoping to just absolutely melt faces on that stage and I hope people are as excited as we are! It’s been far too long! We really miss the U.K. So the energy will be at an all time high.
Do you plan to do a headline tour of the UK anytime soon?
We are long overdue! So hopefully we can swing that soon! Maybe check your local listings later in the year.
What can people expect from a Silverstein show, and why do you think they should come and see you perform live?
We rock dude. Come hang. You’re gonna love it.
Any last words for the fans?
Thanks for all the support throughout the last 2 shitty years. It meant so much that you kept us afloat. Now we’re back and so excited to share a new record with you! Have a listen and we’ll see you on tour!
