Interview – Micah Thunder

I recently reviewed the track, Mama’s House, by the very talented Micah Thunder – his music is fantastic and is well worth checking out – you can find the song at the end of this interview!

You recently released a single titled Mama’s House, which we reviewed. What can you tell us about the track?

The song started with me playing guitar while looking at a picture of my grandma. She’s a huge influence on me, she helped raise me when I was a child. When I was young, I only saw her positive qualities. As I got older, I noticed how she was a more complex person. I saw how she would behave if she got upset. If I ever asked her about her behaviour, she would pretend like nothing happened at all. This song was a way for me to dialogue with her about the light and the dark within each of us.

Has the pandemic hindered your work much?

It actually helped! I was new to music making when quarantine was happening. It allowed me to connect with producers and musicians who were unable to tour. They had the time and opportunity to show me the basics of music making.

What is the writing and recording process like for you?

I make a new song about every 6 weeks. I write the lyrics and melody, then move into the studio. In the studio we flesh out the instrumentals, tweak the structure and I firm up the lyrics. I finish a song by recording the main vocals along with backing vocals.

I am committed to writing and recording regularly. I believe I get better if I work consistently to release music. I don’t grow if I get stuck trying to make each song perfect. No such thing as perfect.

Do you plan to release any more singles in the near future?

I may have one or two more singles this year, but I’m focusing on a larger project now.

Have you started writing for an EP or an album?

I’m writing for both and EP and and album for this year. The EP includes 5 of my favourite songs I’ve written. I want to bring my learning to these songs and give them new life. I want to release this EP this summer. The album is already in the works and will be released by the end of 2022. This would be all new work.

What/who influences you most as an artist? What have you been listening to recently?

I’m deeply moved by a search for meaning. Nearly everything I write is a reflection of that search. I try to move through the emotional spectrum so I can have a more complete picture of my own journey. I think writing across different moods and meditations allows my music to have a variety of sound and themes.

I’m listening to Hiss Golden Messenger. His overall work is well written and executed. My local influences are Lowmello and Walker Kass.

Where are you based? What is the music scene like in your part of the world? Are you influenced by your surroundings?

In Albuquerque we have an excellent local music scene. I’m fortunate to be a part of a music collective, Monsoon Music House. It’s been a big part of me getting involved in the scene. Each musician I work with has a big influence on my overall sound.

Do you have any tour dates lined up?

Touring in the South West this summer, still feeling out the post-pandemic scene.

What can people expect from one of your shows and why should people come and see you perform live?

My live shows feature incredible musicians who support my songs. I love hanging out and getting to know the stories of the people who come to my shows.

Any last words for the fans?

Have fun! Life is what you make of it. I hope for my music to be a part of your journey.
