James Bourne is perhaps more well known as being a member of Busted/McBusted, but he’s also had quite a fruitful solo career, with a new album incoming soon, titled Sugar Beach. I decided to sit down and have a chat with him to find out more about his new album.

You’ve recently released a new single, titled X-man. What can you tell us about the track?
X-man is a song about self-discovery, recognising change in yourself and fully embracing it. The X-Man title is actually a double meaning. It refers to the hero potential inside of all of us and also ‘Ex-man’. I’m not sure if the latter is a legit term, but in my song it’s meant to represent the former version of yourself.
Do you have any more singles planned for release?
I have another single from the album out on June 17 called Gateway.
You also have a new album coming out, titled Sugar Beach. What can you tell us about the album?
The album was written on the island of St Lucia while I was quarantining. I was alone the whole time, so it was an opportunity to make something new and different and also a great way to occupy my time and stop myself going crazy.
Has the pandemic hindered your work much?
Creatively, it’s probably helped. But it’s made playing live more challenging. It’s hard to build momentum when everyone is stuck at home.
You’ve been working for a few decades now, going through different projects over the years. What are your thoughts on the way the music industry has changed over the years?
The music business is constantly changing and evolving. It’s going through a big change again right now with Web 3. It’s an exciting time to be an artist!
How has the writing and recording process changed for you since you first started out?
That part hasn’t really changed much apart from the fact I’m a bit better at it now.
Do you have any plans to reunite Busted or McBusted?
These projects are both very special and if either were to come back in any shape or form, there would need to be a real plan in place with everybody on the same page. It’s not guaranteed but it’s not unlikely.
Do you have any tour dates planned?
I do, but nothing is announced yet. I’m excited to go again!
What can people expect from a James Bourne gig, and why do you think people should come and see you live?
I’d probably check out my stuff on Spotify and YouTube first and then decide to get involved on the next tour! I had the most incredible feedback from the fans who saw me in April! They sung the songs so loud!
Any last words for the fans?
The album is out July 1st!
