Interview: The Lemon Cult

The Lemon Cult are a poppy group with an infectious sound, as displayed in the recently released Pollen. I wanted to find out more about this funky group – read on below to see how we got on!

You recently released a track titled Pollen, which we reviewed. What can you tell us about the song?

Pollen is our fourth single and on this occasion we decided to go on a different path and
express other feelings in our music. We decided to write a ballad full of melancholy and emotion. Pollen was recorded in the same sessions as the previous single, Squares. We were lucky enough to have the super talented singer Daniela Croston in the studio and the rest came very naturally…

Has the pandemic hindered your work much?

The Lemon Cult was created during the first lockdown to fight against the loneliness felt by
everyone at that time. We were all individually so deeply affected by that time that the idea of
joining together came naturally to all of us. And it worked very well, we were so happy to get together around something we are all passionate about. We were working in our respective studios at the same time, sending each other songs and ideas and everyone was motivated, it gave us an escape and a direction when we needed it.

What is the writing and recording process like for you?

The creative process is quite different for each single, because of the new people involved in
each new project, but one thing is always there: it normally always starts with a jam. From the moment we hear a riff, a bass line or a rhythm that we like, we start building a structure and get used to it. Once that’s done, we do overdubs, create lyrics, call in singers and then finally get down to the mix once everyone’s happy.

Do you plan to release any more singles in the near future?

Yes, of course, this collective is on a mission to release as many songs as we physically can. We are all super motivated by the feedback and the increasing visibility we’re so lucky to get, so get ready to welcome a lot of new stuff in your playlists! We are just about to release Il fait Chaud, our brand new single on 19/08 on Sensas

Have you started writing for an EP or an album?

Not for the moment. Of course we’re thinking about it but for now these types of projects are
quite hard to bring into the collective because everyone has a busy life on their own and it would be complicated to get into it. We want to keep that good spontaneity and excitement
that makes everyone inside the group enjoy it, so we are sticking to singles for now.

Your music is very unique sounding, having an electronic bent to it. What/who influences you most as an artist? What have you been listening to recently?

Just like the Sault project that we like very much, we wanted to present The Lemon Cult as a
collective without focusing on any individuals. We were very inspired by the music of Pharrell Williams, Minnie Ripperton or the Disco artists of the 70s. We try to bring out a sense of freshness, togetherness and optimism in our music by going through several styles from r&b to soul, to indie and pop.

Where are you based? What is the music scene like in your part of the world? Are you influenced by your surroundings?

We are all based in London, it is one of the most musically influential cities in the world, with
a wide variety of scenes and artists from all horizons. We love to hang out in the small local
venues where the atmosphere is always friendly. We are sure to be surprised and to discover new things, which helps us to adjust our musical vision.

Do you have any tour dates lined up? Any plans to tour the UK?

No, we don’t plan to perform on stage for the moment, we focus on the studio part and
continue to release music frequently.

Any last words for the fans?

Thank you for listening to The Lemon Cult. Keep listening!
