EP Review: Nix Dadry – The World Goes Round

The World Goes Round is a seamless rock record from Nix Dadry, a rocker from the Midlands who has performed around the world. He introduces a number of different genres into his classic rock sound, including funk, the blues, grunge, alt pop, soul and folk, making for something that sounds out of this world!

By Jane Howkins

First World introduces the listener to Nix’s eclectic world, sounding groovy from the very beginning. It’s a catchy song with a stomp of a rhythm, as gospel-style backing vocals perform in the background, before Nix’s raw vocals appear. The riffs follow the rhythm of the song nicely, oozing attitude and cool, yet still having a melodic quality. It’s a great track to start The World Goes Round off with.

Suicide Sunshine is more of a mid-tempo song – the palm-muted guitars and the way the backing vocals are used make it sound like an alt-rock song out of the 90s, showing another aspect of Nix’s music. The first real chorus arrives about halfway through, bringing back the heavier style that was so prominent on the previous song, before spidery guitar lines snake their way past the palm-muted guitars.

Sidewalk Beggars has a similar rhythm to the previous song, with the verses having a similar palm-muted sound. However, this is short-lived, as the anthemic chorus appears soon after, raising the pitch of the vocals as well as the energy. It’s really catchy, especially as the chorus kicks in, making you want to sing along to Nix’s vocals in style.

Papillon opens in a slightly different manner – the sounds of the night air and a fire are present, working well with the themes of this folky tune. Nix delves deep into the Americana genre here, using acoustic guitars instead of the electric guitars that are so prominent on the other songs. It’s a much mellower song than those that came before, acting as a nice break in the music.

The curiously titled Sputnik Sweetheart also has a folky, acoustic sound, although the main melody also lends itself well to the blues movement. The track also features electric guitars, and when the beat kicks in its clear this isn’t just another stripped-down acoustic song. The main guitar melody really makes the track, sounding haunting on the verses, before the more upbeat chorus kicks in. The organ is a lovely touch too.

The World Goes Round is an interesting EP and one that shows Nix Dadry to have a wealth of influences on his belt, which he’s not afraid to show! It will be interesting to see what he comes up with next time around!
