We featured Australian band Low Key Crush a couple of times back in May, so I’ve been waiting with bated breath for more music from them ever since! As luck would have it, they’ve just released a fantastic new EP titled Bats Over The Eastern Freeway, which you can stream at your leisure below!
By Jane Howkins
Title track Bats Over The Eastern Freeway opens things up nicely, showcasing the group’s indie folk stylings perfectly. The verses are a little subtler than the choruses, making for a nice dynamic change. The rhythm is backed by a strummed acoustic guitar, as little electric motifs emerge every so often to accentuate the main chord sequence. The solo towards the end is quite simple, but it really works!
We reviewed the song Night Time in May – it’s fantastic to hear this amazing tune again! If you missed it the first time around, this is the perfect opportunity to hear the single. It’s a little mellower than the opening track, having a really beautiful, nostalgic quality to it. I particularly enjoyed the vocal harmonies – whilst the lead vocals take pride of place here, the backing vocals are still there, elevating the rest of the tune.
Long Lost Friend (Graeme’s Song) changes things up slightly, adding an accordion into the mix. This helps to add a slight sense of divergence to the music, with little keyboard melodies also playing softly in the background. It all sounds very dreamy, drawing you into Low Key Crush’s world straight away. The guitar lines are perfect as always, melding in perfect harmony with the remainder of the music.
I Want You To Stay is the slowest song on the EP, acting as a nice closer. A prominent bassline performs underneath the spidery guitar lines before the drums kick in, showing a more mellow sound to the band. The guitars branch out every so often, adding a sense of hidden beauty to the track, showing how fantastic Low Key Crush’s songwriting skills are!
If you’ve not checked Low Key Crush out yet, then Bats Over The Eastern Freeway is the perfect place to start. Their dreamy indie-folk sound is simply captivating, ensuring the listener is left feeling satisfied.
