Interview: Asha

I recently discovered an amazing new dream-pop singer called Asha, through her new track, House With A View. It really is a captivating piece of work, sounding very different from most of the pop on the airwaves at the moment. If you like your pop a little different from the mainstream, this is for you!

You recently released a single titled House With A View, which we reviewed. What can you tell us about the track?

I wrote it after a break up when I realized that I would rather achieve the dreams I have for the future alone then be with someone who wasn’t 100% in it for the long haul. I always thought I’d meet the perfect person and we’d create a life together but sometimes life just doesn’t work out that way, but it won’t stop me from striving for what I want.

How has the reception been so far, and where can House With A View be purchased?

The reception has been great. I’ve been hearing from people I’ve never met before that they heard my song randomly and loved it, so that has been very rewarding. You can find it on all streaming platforms and you can purchase it on iTunes.

Do you plan to release any more singles in the near future?

I have a few more in the works! There’s more to come for sure, this is just the start.

Have you any plans to release a full-length album or an EP?

I have a full-length album coming out called Magic.

What is the writing and recording process like for you?

I work mainly alone. I had a few friends help with things here and there on this album but for the most part I get some random burst of inspiration, and everything happens fairly quickly in my studio from recording to production. This is something I’d like to change, and for the next project I’m looking to collaborate more and get out of my own head a little bit.

Did the pandemic hinder your work much?

No, I actually had nothing else to do so I wrote a lot and found other ways to be creative.

Your music has a dream pop sound. What/who influences you most as an artist? What have you been listening to recently?

I’d say this album is very Lana Del Rey meets Radiohead, but I love artists like Kimbra as well – I think there’s a little bit of her in here too somewhere.

Where are you based? What is the music scene like in your part of the world?

I’m in Los Angeles, and since moving here, I’ve met a lot of great musicians and songwriters and it’s inspiring. This is a great city to be creative in and meet likeminded individuals.

Do you have any tour dates lined up for the UK?

I would love to play in the UK. I should play in LA more though and maybe do a short west coast stint at some point. But I’ll save that for the album release!

Any last words for the fans?

I’m grateful for all the love for this song. It comes from a place of honesty, and I think when you write from a place like that, people can relate.
