I love anything punk, so when I first heard London band Femegades’ new EP Not All Men, I knew I had to share it with our readers. As well as the punk vibes, the band also introduce grunge and indie into their sound, mixing the best of all those worlds together! The EP is also fairly political at times, suiting the punk scene right down to the ground!

The song kicks off in style with Speechless, which has quite an interesting rhythm. It’s down-tuned and dirty, featuring fuzzy guitar licks that encapsulate the punk scene so well. The lyrics are well thought-out and address the problems with the ‘not all men’ movement, highlighting Femegades’ push for feminism. The female vocals add a really cool touch to the song, combining melody together with heaviness for the best of both worlds.
Be Alone has a faster rhythm, featuring a cool bassline on the verses which is rather prominent – something I very much enjoyed! The guitar riffs appear every so often, adding a rhythmic quality to the music, before the catchy chorus kicks in. This is one of the things I loved so much about Femegades’ music – it rocks out, yet it’s also infectious to listen to.
Daddy Says changes things up even more, turning the band’s sound into a pop-rock song. Lovely, flowing guitar melodies run through the verses, alongside the luscious vocals. It all makes for a great change of pace, showing a different side to this grunge-punk band. It’s got quite a 90s sound, reminding me a little of Garbage’s work from that era. The chorus will get stuck in your head straight away!
Big Plans brings the riffs back to the forefront of the track, starting out with a huge buzzsaw guitar line, oozing a sense of attitude throughout. The rhythm is a proper stomp, making you want to tap your feet along and headbang to this track straight away. It never loses its sense of melody though, with the chorus sounding particularly catchy. This track will appeal to those into their pop-punk, as well as their punk rock.
Femegades are a fantastic new band on the scene, following in the footsteps of bands like The Distillers and Garbage. The production is a little raw, but it suits the sound of the EP well, with the songwriting remaining top-notch throughout. Whether you like punk, indie, rock or grunge, you need to check Not All Men out!
