Discovery: The Maddocks

The Maddocks are a Stockport-based rock quartet who formed a band early last year, having already all known each other from their school days. They’ve just hit my radar thanks to their jangly, Yard Act-esque banger, This Is Why We Can’t Have Nice Things.

By Graeme Smith

The track opens gently enough with a groovy bass line but then wastes no time introducing lively percussion, abrasive guitar textures and attention-catching vocals. It all coalesces into an anthemic chorus, where the passion of the vocals ramp up to ten, and the instrumentals become insanely catchy. Lyrically it speaks of the mad situations in which the band members often find themselves.

The Maddocks are bringing a fun and catchy energy to modern post-punk. They’re definitely ones to watch in the underground UK scene. You can check out This Is Why We Can’t Have Nice Things below.
