Interview: The Kid And I

British alt-rock group The Kid And I are certainly on the up and up, with their new single Heart Strings showing just why their music had been lauded so much! I reckon they’re going to do fantastically well within the British music scene – find out why with our interview with Jacob Powell below!

By Jane Howkins

You recently released a single titled Heart Strings. What can you tell us about the track?

Hello! So our new single Heart Strings is a heavy alternative rock break-up song, about a deteriorating relationship and all the questions that poses.

How has the reception to Heart Strings been so far, and where can the song be purchased?

So far the reception has been great! It’s been going down really well at live shows and we’ve got a music video coming out very soon to support it! It can be streamed on all major streaming services and purchased on iTunes, I believe.

Do you plan to release any more singles in the near future? Do you plan to release an EP or an album anytime soon?

This year is gonna be a biggy for us – we’re just finishing off a new EP with hopes to release music every 2 months for the rest of the year, which will be really exciting!

Your music has an alternative rock sound. What/who influences you most as an artist? What have you been listening to recently?

So for me my biggest influences tend to be Foo Fighters, Queens of The Stone Age, Biffy Clyro and lyrically Sam Fender is a massive inspiration for me! Recently, I’ve been obsessed with Kid Kapichi and Snayx I just saw them on tour and they blew me away completely!

You started as a one man band formed by Jacob Powell. How did the band as it looks today come about? How was the process of moving to a full band, compared to working solo?

The band in its current version has been a while in the making – we’ve had 2 guitarists and a bassist change already, but I think it’s finally starting to settle down – and for me its been really joyful. I love everyone in the band and having them add their characters to the songs has really brought a new life to a lot of the tunes, which is so exciting – especially for the future.

What do you think is the biggest issue in the music industry at the moment?

I think the biggest issue with the music industry for me at the moment is the fake music marketing people. There are loads of really really great ones who offer great advice and have a lot of time for up and coming artists, and a bunch who will scam you out of your money without a second thought – I think that disingenuousness really messes people up and has at times been difficult to navigate.

Where are you based? What is the music scene like in your part of the world?

So we are London-based and London has a great live music scene generally – there’s so many music nights happening all the time, which can be daunting at first but great once you get involved!

Do you have any tour dates lined up for the UK?

We are currently just focusing on London dates and getting a following going here, specifically at Temple of Art and Music – which I think everyone should try and go to! SO MUCH LIVE MUSIC! There is early talk about getting a small UK tour together by the end of the year – if any promoters or venues like our sound and wanna get in touch, please don’t hesitate to reach out!

Any last words for the fans?

To anyone who has taken the time to have a listen to our tracks or come to a gig, thank you so much! We want to make something fun and positive that people enjoy and all the support so far has been wonderful!

Thank you so much!
