I first discovered Glendale-based act Love Ghost a few months ago, loving their eclectic sound. Since then, I’ve kept an eye out for their music, discovering their EP Venganza Del Fantasma recently. It’s a really interesting record, mixing a number of different genres together in a fantastic way. Make sure you take a listen to the stream at the end of this review if you like what you read!

There are four songs on Venganza Del Fantasma, with the first track being one we’ve reviewed before – Ghost Town. The tone of the track suits the title well, starting out with a creeping guitar melody before a set of chugging riffs arrive. It’s a rock song, but there are also elements of electronica, pop, hip-hop and punk thrown in for good measure, making for one eclectic track. The lyrics change between Spanish and English at different points in the song, adding a slightly different flavour to the music.
Inferno starts off in similar style, with a noir-style melody opening things up nicely. Love Ghost have a real talent for creating eerie sounds, and this track is no different! The vocals occasionally have a whispered tone, building up and then backing down again, keeping the listener constantly guessing. There’s even some rapping at times, seeing the lyrics spat out in anguish as the tension increases.
ALI3N is more of a typical hip-hop song, featuring a classic synthy beat that works exceedingly well with the percussion. However, the electric guitars appear shortly afterwards on the chorus, which is incredibly anthemic. It will get stuck inside your head instantly, as the track has a singalong quality to it. The flowing synths on the chorus have a really cool sound, working well underneath the vocals.
Pick Myself Apart changes things once more, opening with some emotional lyrics that seep through the music in a lovely way. It’s quite a mellow piece of music, changing the dynamics of the EP rapidly. The vocals actually reminded me a lot of the vocal style that seems to have perpetuated the pop-punk scene, although the percussion and guitar style differentiates the music somewhat from that genre. The female vocals make for a nice touch alongside the male vocals too.
Venganza Del Fantasma is a really interesting EP, and one that sets Love Ghost apart from the crowd. They’ve really created something of wonder here, combining several different genres into something magical.
