EP Review: Fifth Lucky Dragon – White Lies & Purple Elephants

Fifth Lucky Dragon is an Indianapolis, USA-based writer, producer, multi-instrumentalist, creative director and singer, real name Louis Imperiale. Influenced by the likes of Glass Animals, Twenty One Pilots and The Killers, he’s just come to my attention thanks to his new three track EP White Lies & Purple Elephants.

By Graeme Smith

Like so many modern artists, Fifth Lucky Dragon came to prominence through Tik Tok. The title track of his new EP got over 100,000 likes on the platform before its release, and that popularity translated into streams once it was out. Best described as alternative pop, there’s certainly a commercially pleasing element to Louis’s sound, but also something that feels a break from the norm.

White Lies & Purple Elephants starts in a dramatic fashion with choral vocals before it relaxes into a pop groove. Louis’s vocals are the star of the show, Brendon Urie-esque in their delivery. The track’s lyrics are wonderfully surreal, feeling both out there and relatable. It’s a great start.

The collection comes with two other Fifth Lucky Dragon tracks, Don’t Look Too Far Ahead and Mango. The former is a ballad, showcasing the more delicate side of Louis’s sound. It comes complete with some beautifully philosophical lyrics. Mango, on the other hand, ups the tempo, giving us sweet and savoury retro dance pop.

There’s so much about the Fifth Lucky Dragon sound that feels modern and aimed at a youthful audience, but under the surface there’s a universal appeal. Louis’s lyrics drive deeper than a lot of what’s in the chart but he doesn’t sacrifice commercial appeal. The fact that he’s putting out his music single-handedly makes it all the more impressive. It’s only a matter of time before he’s picked up by a big label, and the whole world will be bopping to Fifth Lucky Dragon.
