Xeven is the performing name of a New York City, USA-based Russian-Estonian singer songwriter who has just hit my radar. With work that is unique and intriguing, I knew I had to share her music with you. Her latest is a collaboration with Amii Dawes called Neck Verse, Vol. 2.

It’s difficult to pigeon-hole Xeven into a genre, and that’s part of her charm. There are elements of pop and drum and bass but neither is an exact fit. What’s certain is that Neck Verse, Vol. 2 is rich with atmosphere and ambiance. Heavy bass is contrasted with light, punchy percussion, while the vocal harmonies are soft and mesmerising. As the track progresses, bright, Crystal Castles-esque electronic layers keep things fresh.
The first volume of Neck Verse was created by Amii, and explores themes of mental health and introspection. Vol. 2 is intended as a follow up, and speaks more outwardly, exploring the current global political climate, especially in light of what’s currently happening in Ukraine.
