Domax is a London-based producer who makes unique sounding songs with an electronic edge. I recently had the opportunity to check out his latest EP release, New Moon, and I loved it. It’s well worth your while if you like your EDM a little different to the norm, and you can find a full stream at the end of this interview.

You released an EP titled New Moon. What can you tell us about the EP?

This EP went down pretty quickly compared to the others I’ve released. I had a few tunes lying around and there was a possibly that we’d lose our studio space, so I guess it spurred me on to get it done while I knew we had access to the studio. I started writing the tunes in early November and they were mixed and mastered by the end of December. I wanted to give this EP a slightly funkier sound but without deviating from my own sound. I used the amazing Dan See (Lianne la havas/Tom Jones) on drums for this one, but I play everything else on my monopoly synthesiser.

How has the reception to New Moon been so far, and where can the EP be purchased?

I’ve had some really nice feedback which is always great – The EP can be purchased on my Bandcamp page.

Do you plan to release any singles in the near future?

I’m just finishing another EP which will be by 5th one. I’m planning on releasing 2 singles followed up with a 5 track EP. These new tunes will all be out at the end of 2023 on my own record label – Jam International.

Are there any plans to release a full-length album anytime soon?

I want to make an album but I want to wait until I’ve made a bit more noise about what I’m doing. I’m planning on making an album this year but as an ambient guitar quartet – I’m not sure if this will be released as a Domax record though.

What is the writing and recording process like for you?

I always try to get some kind of different sounds or texture out of my synth or pedals for each new song, just to avoid using the same information on all my tunes.I like jamming on sequences sent to my synth and chopping up the best bits to create melodies and parts. I usually end up with an idea that I would have never been able to think of or play directly. Editing an arrangement is a big part of my writing process. I put ideas down at home and get a rough structure before putting it into Logic, and then I take it to the studio to finish the arrangement. I then mix it and send it off for mastering. I just hate when it takes ages to get a piece of music finished.

Your music has an experimental synthwave sound. What/who influences you most as an artist? What have you been listening to recently?

I listen to loads of different music and I try to stay as open minded as I can. There’s always something good you can steal. At the time of making New Moon, I was listening to a lot of Machine Girl (mainly the Gemini album), Faithless and Kraftwerk. I want to get more of a trance dance music feel into my tunes but without losing my own sound. Recently I’ve been listening to a lot of Bob Marley and Shuggie Ottis – Inspiration Information is hands down one of my favourite albums!

Have you got anything else exciting coming up this year?

I’m just finishing a new 5 track EP and I’m really happy with how its sounding. I’m hoping to do some collaborations with a few singers that I love. I’m a co-founder of record label Jam International – we are a collaboration of artists based in London. This year we are going to set up different live events around London showcasing and supporting artists who work on the label. It’s tough to get out there and make an impact if you’re not making music that’s part of the current scene – the way we see it is if we all put the work in, we can make more noise about what we are doing and share the love! There a lot of people in London making really original sounding stuff. I just want to create a scene and find a home for them.

You’re based in London. How is the local music scene faring at the moment?
London has a great music scene, there are a lot of very talented musicians and artists all over the place. I feel that the scene has become a bit oversaturated with Instagram reel inspired jazz funk and lo-fi music. There is a lot of new original stuff happening, I just don’t think there’s really a home for it yet.

Do you have any tour dates lined up for the UK?
As of now no, but as previously mentioned, I’m setting up a new night for my record label and I’m really looking forward to getting out and making some stuff happen.
