Interview: Fury of a Dying Planet

I recently completed a round-up review based on post-rock/post-metal music. One of the acts I featured was Fury of a Dying Planet, with their debut single, Bloodied Fjords. It’s also got a lot in common with the metal genre, so fans of their heavier styles of music should enjoy the track too. If you missed it, you can check it out at the end of this interview!

By Jane Howkins

You recently released a single titled Bloodied Fjords. What can you tell us about the track?

Well this track was entirely inspired by the horrors that take place in the Faroe Islands, as part of their Grindadrap custom where the hunt and hoard entire pods of dolphins into a bay and then slaughter them all. It’s just horrific and disgusting. The brutal footage of dead dolphins and carcasses being dumped into the ocean that you can see in the lyric video was provided by Sea Shepherd who documented the nightmare to show the world.

It’s your debut single! How has the reception been so far, and where can the song be purchased?

The song is available on all digital platforms, Apple Music, Spotify, Amazon, Deezer and even TikTok!

Do you plan to release any more singles in the near future?

Oh yes, in fact I have already recorded 5 more songs. I’m hoping to release 2 more singles before putting the whole album out.

Are there any plans to release an album or EP?

Sure is, the whole thing is already done and ready to go… although strangely enough, the song titles are still not really decided yet.

Your music has a very heavy sound, yet there’s also a lot of melody in there!. What/who influences you most as an artist? What have you been listening to recently?

My biggest influences would be Devin Townsend, Machine Head, Deftones, Tool, Gojira, Killswitch Engage… I could go on.. I love metal!! But I feel too old and tired to just write shouty stuff which is why there’s plenty of clean melodies in my music.

You describe your music as ‘environmental music for those fighting for the earth and all creatures’, something I very much agree with. Are there any particular causes you’d like to draw attention to?

There are loads, Sea Shepherd, WWF and the Rain Forest Alliance are the big ones. But I also want the world to see the heroes like Ocean Cleanup and Coral Gardeners who are trying to clean our messes up and bring new life to the world.

Do you have anything else exciting coming up this year?

Well, I’m hoping to release 2 more singles and some merchandise. All profits will go to environmental charities so I’m trying to figure out as many earning streams as I can.

Where are you based? How is the local music scene faring at the moment?

I am based in East London, the local scene is still ticking along thanks in large part to amazing promoters like Camden Live and great grass roots venues like the Fiddlers Elbow. It’s still tough out there, people are now weighing up between paying bills or going out these days.

Do you have any tour dates lined up for the UK?

Not with this project, if something amazing should happen and opportunities open up, I would definitely not turn down the chance at playing these tunes live!

Any last words for the fans?

When you watch the news and all you see is death, destruction and extinction on such a global scale, often for nothing more than profit and ego – it can be hard not to feel just hopeless. I hope that the music of Fury of a Dying Planet helps you to rise, make a fist and stand strong. There is hope, we just need to stand with those who’ve already begun to fight for the planet.
