The Thing With Feathers is a band that take their cues from the likes of Coldplay, The 1975 and The Strokes, and lovers of pop rock and indie rock will find a lot to love about their sound. The track list of their new EP is meticulously selected, and consists of five singles, all certified bangers, and a previously-unreleased track Can You See Me that closes the EP’s story.
It starts with Don’t Break My Heart which has an instantly infectious guitar riff and laidback bass groove. The track takes its time settling in before emotive vocals come in, singing the storytelling lyrics we’ve grown used to from the band. It’s the perfect anthemic introduction for what’s to come.
Everything I’m Missing comes next, opening pensively with drums and guitar before developing into a bombastic ballad. Golden ups the tempo and injects a little bit of country rock into proceedings. These Drugs gets lowdown and groovy. It’s expressive and memorable chorus is a highlight.
Title track Waste My Revenge perfectly cements the EP’s themes of love lost and heartbreak, describing the bitter period at the end of a relationship. Can You See Me rounds things off with a genre-bending moment. It’s blend of hard rock and psychedelia is a surprise coming from The Thing With Feathers, but a welcome one. More please!
The Thing With Feathers are serious contenders on the underground US rock scene, and their star is certainly on the rise. They’re picking up their fair share of international admirers too, this blog included. This EP feels like just another stepping stone towards greatness for them.
