Nicki Wells is a UK-based acoustic folk singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist who has just caught my attention thanks to her emotional new song Holy Smoke.
By Graeme Smith
Holy Smoke is a lush, unconventional piece consisting of delicate strings, melancholic piano and compelling vocals. It’s a song about grief and loss, so is suitably mournful, yet there’s a relatable warmth about it too, and its image-rich lyrics will have you facing death’s inevitability with a smile on your face.
The track is taken from Nicki’s upcoming debut album Ellipsis, a collection I’m greatly looking forward to hearing. It was produced by Nicki, and mixed by Luke Potashnick. You can give Holy Smoke a listen below.
