Discovery: Pearl

Pearl is a London-based indie pop artist who has just come to my attention thanks to her glistening and philosophical new single Fish.

By Graeme Smith

Opening with heavy, hard-hitting bass synth, Fish is the kind of track that instantly grabs you. Pearl’s fascinating vocals come in, singing lyrics that are rich in poetic storytelling. You’ll be hanging on every word all the way up to its bright and whimsical pop chorus. Beneath its brightness, though, is a message of mortality. Pearl wrote Fish as a way of processing the loss of her grandfather, her first experience death.

With a sound that fans of Sylan Esso, BANKS or London Grammar will find appealing, I can foresee great things coming from Pearl.

Fish was co-produced by Pearl and Matt Ingram, and recorded at Urchin Studios. You can give it a listen below.
