Charlie Belle are Brooklyn, USA-based siblings, Jendayi and Gyasi Bonds. The pair had been performing together for most of their young lives and focus on their experience of being black and queer in their music. Their latest track explores the George Floyd protests and the nature of fear. It’s called What Is This.
By Graeme Smith
What Is This opens in a dreamy way, somewhat disguising the depth of its story. Once the expressive vocals come in and the lyrics begin to unfold, you know you’re in for something different and special. This track is truly arresting, and a cut above what you might hear in the pop charts right now.
The duo first caught the attention of the world at the tender ages of sixteen and fourteen years old. They were picked up by NPR, nylon, MTV, Vice and Wired, and even made the front page of their hometown paper, the Austin Chronicle. It’s easy to see why there is so much hype about Charlie Belle. They are truly bringing us something we’ve not heard before, and I’m excited to see where they go next with it. I hope you will be too. You can check out What Is This below.
