Interview: Angus Woodhead

I’m not normally a massive fan of worship music, but when it’s as good as the songs Australian singer-songwriter Angus Woodhead produces, I had to find out more! His latest release, Freedom, is a proper banger, and something both religious folks and the non-religious can enjoy. Find out more about Angus here!

We recently reviewed your track Freedom. What can you tell us about the song?

It was produced by myself, David Deighton & Misha Gursky and recorded & mixed by myself at Glasshouse Studios in Australia. It was mastered by Andrew Mendelson at Georgetown Masters and written 6 years ago in Queensland, Australia by myself, David & Misha. The lyrics were recently tweaked and finished by Peggy Barr.

How has the reception to Freedom been so far, and where can the track be purchased?

Fantastic – people love it and playlist curators also seem to love it.

You’re also a worship leader. Are all your tracks based around your faith?

I was a touring musician/singer for many years, touring in both Australia and overseas. I made the decision 10 years ago to leave secular gigging and just focus on music dedicated to God.

Do you plan to release any more singles in the near future?

My new single The Dance is due out on 26th October on all platforms.

Are there any plans to release a full length album or EP anytime soon?

I actually have a bunch of songs nearly finished and in various stages of writing and recording. In the year 2023, I see no need to release albums or EPs any more – I will probably just release singles.

Your music has a country/folk sound. What/who are you most influenced by? What have you been listening to recently?

I spent many years in country bands when I was younger. I love the genre. honestly any country music that is produced and recorded/ mixed/ mastered well I enjoy. A good quality sound is important for my listening experience. Plus of course, catchy riffs, hooks and melodies.

You’re based in Australia. What is the local music scene like at the moment?

It’s always difficult playing original music live. You need to create a fan base. Releasing a really good song and getting it onto playlists, the internet and free to air radio is critical. You can then tour off the back of that success. Having an amazing song is the first and most vital step. then making sure it’s recorded, mixed and mastered to a very high standard.

Do you have anything else exciting coming up this year?

I’m actually in week 3 of a 4 week spiritual retreat. It involves praying, fasting, worshipping, reading the bible, resting and writing songs. It’s just amazing to get away from the rat race. I’m in a little cabin in the country. It’s beautiful and so peaceful. I hope to do this once a year. I’ve created and recorded 6 songs so far (an average of 2 a week).

Do you have any tour dates lined up for the UK?

Right now I’m not touring. However, there will come a time in the future when I will look to leading worship events in the UK and around the world. The Lord will need to promote me first of course. I’m not pushing those doors open. I will let Him grow and mature me so I can steward the gifts He has given me well and do His will in my life.
