EP Review: Shane Rennison – Nice To Meet You

Shane Rennison is an indie pop singer songwriter who hails from the Catskill Mountains in New York, USA. He’s just come to my attention thanks to his new EP, a five track collection that pays homage to his home. It’s called Nice To Meet You.

Shane’s sound brings to mind the likes of The 1975, Passion Pit and Harry Styles, so if that’s your thing you’ll definitely want to check out his new EP. It opens with Cold Winter. It’s a slow and introspective start, with an arrangement that instantly transports you. After a piano intro, a driving indie pop arrangement comes in. Shane’s vocals are mesmerising as they deliver an emotional story of hope and homecoming. It’s a great start.

Ghost slows things down a little while keeping the emotion high. An unconventional instrumental arrangement feels engaging while its story of a dying relationship keep you gripped. Another Chance ups the tempo once again but keeps its focus on romance. Its bouncy percussion and hypnotic piano melody makes it a highlight.

Drunk goes inward while keeping the drums lively, with rock influences. There’s a captivating story in its lyrics and Shane’s vocals are particularly soulful as it unfolds. Temptations then closes the collection with a bright moment that contrasts winter in the Catskills with summer in the tropics. Its dance-inducing rhythm and bittersweet lyrics make it a final highlight.

Shane Rennison has packed a lot into this short EP. I arrived at its end thoroughly satisfied, and glad to have met him sonically. He’s got a knack for storytelling with his lyrics, and honeyed vocals that are very easy to listen to. I feel like he certainly deserves some international attention.

Nice To Meet You was produced by Julian Giaimo, who also features on all instruments expect Shane’s piano. You can give it a listen below.
