Album Review: The Moniker – Luxury in Sadness

The Moniker, real name Daniel Karlsson, is a Swedish singer songwriter who has just hit my radar with the release of his new album. Recorded in two takes with the musicians only allowed to listen to the music twice before recording, it’s a raw, genuine and experimental collection called Luxury in Sadness.

By Graeme Smith

Though new to us, The Moniker has been a proponent of the Swedish music scene for fifteen years, and made a notable appearance on Swedish Idol in 2007. Dedicated to independence and freedom of expression, he is always finding ways to innovate.

In an age where music is highly-produced and refined, the process for creating Luxury in Sadness is a bold one. Daniel wanted it to sound as organic and close to source as possible, so did away with over-rehearsals and endless takes to achieve perfection. The result proves to be quite breath-taking.

It opens with Song For Malin which features the vocals of Frida Öhrn. Written for Daniel’s fiancée, it’s a soulful and romantic start, delivered against a backdrop of acoustic guitar and strings courtesy of Stockholm Strings. Daniel and Frida’s vocals work beautifully together in a powerful, stand out chorus, before the track’s full orchestration comes in. It’s a captivating intro.

The Diary of a Blasted Romantic keeps things delicate, giving plenty of space to Daniel’s expressive vocals and descriptive lyrics. I Am the One takes things in an alternative folk direction with a percussive arrangement and plenty of poetry. Hang On opens with some mournful brass before delivering a bittersweet story. Reminiscent of the Beatles, it’s a highlight.

NO 1 sees Daniel’s vocals take on a soaring, pleading quality during a short acoustic vignette. Lay Your Head on Me brings with it lively plucked strings and a reflection on growing up and changing. A choral chorus proves to be a highlight.

Someday is a rousing and meditative moment led by keys and isolated vocals. With You I Will Be closes the album in the same vein it began. With an undercurrent of folk and country, Daniel recommits to his love. It’s a final highlight.
