Birmingham-based Saer, real name Simon Davies, is one of those acts that hit our radar this year and we just kept coming back for more. After discovering him through his unique cover of The Police’s Walking On The Moon, we followed that up with shares of I Walk The Line and NYC. Now he’s back with a new one perfect for the festive season. It’s called This Time of Year.
By Graeme Smith
Much like Saer’s interpretation of Johnny Cash’s I Walk The Line, This Time of Year explores the theme of loneliness and isolation. It’s a delicate and reflective number that eschews the usual Christmas stereotypes, rather honing in on the darker underbelly of the season. It’s an anthem for those missing loved ones during a time when we’re expected to be together. The complex emotion of it is beautifully articulated by Simon’s expressive vocals.
Having risen to prominence on The Voice UK with his rendition of Harry Styles’ Sign of the Times, it’s clear that Saer has star potential. I simply adore his unique approach and song-writing!
