New Music: LoveSelf – Mummy & Daddy

We’ve featured Halifax, Canada-based indie rock artist LoveSelf, real name Joshua O’Riley, a couple of times before, but it’s been well over a year since the Northern Ireland-born, England-raised artist has been on these pages. Now he’s back with a new one taking aim at his negligent parents. Dark and cynical, it’s called Mummy & Daddy.

By Graeme Smith

Right from the off, you can tell you’re in for something a little different with Mummy & Daddy. Brooding and discordant, it sits somewhere between grunge and folk rock. Its lyrics are visceral, skewering the idea of true love and the perfect family unit. It’s an autobiographical track, so only Joshua could have written it, but it’s his way with words that truly articulates its ghoulish tale.

Mummy & Daddy was self-recorded by Joshua in his bedroom studio and produced with the help of Jack Pike, who also did the mixing and mastering. You can give it a listen below.
