The Trudy are a London-based post-punk band who have featured a couple of times before on this blog. It was in 2021 that they hit our radar through their single Dear Sancho. Earlier this year, they were back courtesy of their track and video Every Story Ever Told. Both songs feature on their new mini-album called Outside Time.

Though only 21 minutes long, The Trudy are quick to point out that Outside Time is a mini-album rather than an EP because of the way the tracks collectively take you on a musical journey. It’s a journey that starts, appropriately enough, with Dawn. It’s a short but atmospheric intro that sets the scene before we arrive at the folksy and image-laden Where the Roses Grow. It’s classic rock, but with something a little unconventional about it. What stands out most are the expressive and captivating vocals.

The aforementioned Dear Sancho gives us a timely reminder of why we fell in love with The Trudy in the first place. Its sultry, literate tale is thoroughly absorbing, while its slow-burning verses give way to a soaring, expansive chorus. It’s a definite highlight.

Every Story Ever Told sits at the heart of the album and provides a psychedelic wonderland for those with philosophical wanderlust. Early acoustic guitar gives way to an exhilarating folk rock arrangement during a slow-burning crescendo.

Giants Theme is a short but richly complex instrumental with some ethereal vocalisations. Pop Pop then kicks things up with some delicious punk pop for the long-serving fans before Arrival closes the mini-album with a short and jangly farewell. It rounds off a record that is much greater than the sum of its parts.

The Trudy formed back in 1979 and are currently a trio featuring Melissa Jo Heathcote on vocals, Del Tagg on guitar and Peter Tagg on drums. Outside Time is out now via Miron Music and you can check it out below.
