Made up of New York City, USA duo James Bannon and Max Chomet, Jenny Rubicon is a band who have just come to my attention thanks to the upcoming release of their debut album. It’s called Greedy.

James and Max met in college and, though they hit it off personally, they found they didn’t have much in common in terms of musical tastes. During the COVID pandemic, they revisited the prospect of writing music together and Greedy is the result.
The album opens with Dinner Party and we are greeted instantly with the characteristic lively and jangly style of Jenny Rubicon. Lovers of ’00s indie and emo rock will find a lot to love about their sound, but there’s also something distinctly unique about it. Its nostalgic and emotional storytelling will have you gripped. It’s a strong start.
Title track Greedy is a rumbling, timeless wonder full of overlapping vocals and rich with a steady groove. It will get you moving and feeling all at once and proves an early highlight.
Monte Carlo has a wistfulness about it, channelling ’90s grunge and indie rock influences. Belgrade is a punchy affair with a catchy, looping riff. Easy Love ramps the energy up even further with some fuzzy, monster riffs and vibrant percussion. It’s another highlight.
Sparrow has a cantering tempo and Max’s vocals take on a particularly expressive quality in it. Zodiac Killer bristles with an appropriate violence. Breakfast With Chloe softens things with a dreamy, romantic moment before Webdings closes the album with a track that leaves it all out there. Its bright yet melancholic contrast makes it a final highlight.
Greedy was mixed and produced by Travis Harrison. The album will be released 19 January 2024 and is available for pre-order via Jenny Rubicon’s Bandcamp page.
