EP Review: baddJazz – Just Drinking

BaddJazz are Kaan and Pat, a Los Angeles, USA-based duo who have just come to my attention. Already making waves on the LA live scene, it’s about time the rest of the world sits up and takes notice of them. Their debut EP is called Just Drinking.

By Graeme Smith

Just Drinking is a collection that tells a story, taking you to a tipsy night out with friends in bars. It all starts with Not Drunk which brings us some early distorted guitar and a healthy dose of funk. It’s the kind of track that gets you nodding your head and before you know it, your whole body is moving. Expressive vocals are the icing on the cake. It’s an inviting start that also showcases baddJazz’s boundary-pushing sound.

Mean Things follows seamlessly, introducing elements of psychedelic rock during a big, bombastic moment. Heavy blues riffs underpin everything, creating a compelling groove while the vocals tell a low and dark story.

Suicide by Space is suitably cosmic, with lingering synths and captured audio. Things take an unexpected dream pop turn after the heavy grooves of the first two track and it makes a nice palate cleanser. It’s a highlight.

Another Round closes the EP with a lilting piano melody reminiscent of the Cheers theme tune. The lyrics are beautifully warm, nostalgic and philosophical as they lead to big finish that ties together the full gamut of the baddJazz genre mix. It’s another highlight in a collection that has no real low-lights.

A debut this strong will always get me excited about where an act is going to go with their music. It’s safe to say that baddJazz have started best possible footing (even after a few drinks). I foresee a bright future for Kaan and Pat if they keep this up.
