EP Review: The Midnight River Crew – N8 – The MRC At KonK Studios

The Midnight River Crew are a London-based act who have just come to my attention through the release of their latest EP. Marking something of a departure from their usual sound, it’s an acoustic collection that brings together the song writing of Mark Johnson and the vocals and piano of Isabella Coulstock. It’s called N8 – The MRC AT Konk Studios.

Founded by The Kinks, KonK Studios is as much a character in the EP’s tale as the musicians involved. The Kinks and Ray Davies are major influences for Mark and that comes through loud and clear in his song writing. In a similar vein, Isabella is also a songwriter and has worked with the likes of Chaz Jankle of Ian Dury and the Blockheads. All this combines means that N8 feels like a love note to a time gone by, ensuring we don’t forget its relevance here in 2024.

The EP consists of four tracks – the ponderous Black Crow White Dove opens things before we are treated to the lively yet pensive (All you have to do is) Ask Me To dance and the brooding ballad No Shame In Love. The download comes with a bonus version of the band’s track Charlie Rainbow.

Across it all, Mark and Isabella’s vocals work beautifully together, soaring and passionate, with a great amount of contrast between her lightness and his rough edges. A particular highlight is the romantic duet of (All you have to do is) Ask Me to dance.

If you’re looking for some classic song writing and an intimate performance, then you need look no further than N8. It’s an EP for lovers of all kind and will melt even the hardest heart.

Featuring alongside Mark and Isabella on the EP is Phil Johnson. It was produced and mixed by Al Drake Brockman, assisted by George Chung. Charlie Rainbow features Mark Johnson on acoustic guitar and vocals, Jeff Root on bass, and Johnny Steinbergy on shaker. Additional contributions come from Martin Howard.
