Tim Atlas is a singer, songwriter and producer based in Brooklyn, USA. He’s just come to my attention through the release of his latest EP, Matinee.

Matinee is the follow up to Tim’s 2023 EP Le Soir and a prelude to a larger project set to arrive in the Spring. Tim considers his latest to have Sunday morning vibes, following on from the all night party that was his previous EP, and it’s great to see him showing such diversity in his sound, setting aside the grunge and industrial for something a little lighter yet more cinematic.

It features three previously released singles – The Deceiving, Lifeboat, and Lighthouse – and two more tracks that bookend them. Title track Matinee opens things with a soulful, simmering vignette while Out Cold wraps things up with a lingering and intimate moment that gradually builds to a cathartic finish.

The singles have already received a warm reception across the media and on streaming platforms and its easy to see why. Lighthouse is a funky, rousing number with a dance-inducing bassline and electronic layers. Its bright chorus will stick with you. The Deceiving is a little more mellow, led by a looping piano melody, stripped back percussion and sultry vocals. Lifeboat, which sees Tim teaming up with French-Italian artist Raphael Futura, is introspective and soul-wrenching, introducing a little melancholy without losing any of the dreaminess introduced by the previous tracks.

Tim’s new EP is such a chill collection. The subtle complexity of its compositions will have you fully immersed, and the expression and quality of his vocals are right up there with the best. He’s making some top tier alternative pop that demands your attention. I’m going to be keeping a close eye on him from now on.
