Interview: Gianfranco GFN

We’ve featured Swiss acid-jazz composer and musician Gianfranco GFN a few times now, so I felt it was time to finally have another chat with him. We also carried out a review of his latest release, SUNSHINE (And I had a dream), which you can check out at the bottom!

By Jane Howkins

It’s been a while since we last spoke to you. How have things been?

It’s true, but I work a lot! I’m in the production phase of my new album and I’m in the studio a lot to record tracks. I work with professional musicians, so there’s a whole organization to manage.

You recently released a new track called SUNSHINE (And I had a dream). What can you tell us about the song?

It’s a track with a retro pop-soul style, and it gave me a lot of pleasure, not only when I was writing it, but especially when I was recording it. It’s a little nod to the Beatles – you can feel a bit of their style!

How has the reception to the track been been so far, and where can it be purchased?

This track has had a lot of very positive feedback. In today’s more electro world, it’s true that this track brings a freshness and a few other things! What’s more, it’s been shared a lot on various playlists, and I’ve had some very positive feedback.

Do you have any more singles planned for release in the near future?

Yes, there are still 8 tracks to come, and they’ll be on my new album, along with the ones you’re already listening to. This album will be released this year, an adventure that began in September 2022 – a magnificent adventure with artists who accompany me extraordinarily.

Are there any plans for a full-length album or an EP anytime soon?

The next track will be released in March and is called ARE YOU LOST. As I explained before, it will be part of my new album.

Your music has a retro feel, mixing a few different genres together. What/who are you most influenced by?

My music is in a style that used to be called acid-jazz – today it’s more likely to be called r&b-soul, but here again, opinions differ according to the person. But my world is essentially a mix of jazz-soul-funk-bossa, and I’ve been greatly influenced by the world of jazz and blues, especially from the 70s.

What have you been listening to recently?

I really listen to everything, because I love the world of music and especially composition, so I admire a lot of artists from all horizons – music is magic…

Do you have anything else exciting coming up in the next few months?

At the moment, I’m mainly thinking about making my album, which takes up a lot of my time and my mind! Sometimes I think of project ideas, but as time is short, I take notes and I know that one day I’ll use them.

Do you have any tour dates lined up for the UK?

Not for the moment, for the concerts we’ll have to wait and see, because there’ll be a certain amount of preparation, but I hope soon! We’ll see…

Any last words for the fans?

First and foremost, a big thank you to all those who listen to and share my music. Even in today’s world, there are people who appreciate and love my music. Don’t hesitate to sign up for my newsletter, which you’ll find on my website! Thank you all, and I hope to continue to bring a little escape and dreams to all those who love this kind of music.
