EP Review: Alexa Perez – Dear Future Me

Alexa Perez is an Alabama, USA-based artist who burst onto my radar around this time last year through her single ROCKETSHIP. Now I’m pleased to see her return to these pages with a new EP release.

By Graeme Smith

Dear Future Me brings together previously released singles like ROCKETSHIP with never heard before materials and is the culmination of Alexa’s first four years as a recording artist. It is at once autobiographical and outward looking, perfectly capturing what it means to exist in your 20s in the 2020s.

ROCKETSHIP launches the EP, every part the sultry indie pop anthem I remember it to be. A simmering chorus arrives at a catchy and memorable chorus that’s full of emotion. It perfectly sets up the five tracks that follow, each exploring a different part of Alexa’s life.

Cliché slows things down. With some raw vulnerability, we are invited deeper into Alexa’s mind and feelings. Virgo Moon keeps things stripped back in its intro while Alexa delivers some introspective and image-laden lyrics. A triumphant finish makes it a mid-EP highlight.

Obsessive feels fresh and experimental and speaks frankly of not liking and disguising one’s true self. On My Own brings together the themes of the album well with a beautifully textured instrumental and bittersweet lyrics. Wondering, Alexa’s first single, closes things with a vibrant, pacy dance number. It invites us to shake it all off and release what’s pent up. It’s a final highlight.

Alexa Perez is a pop artist not to be overlooked and this EP proves it. She has a sound that feels very much of the zeitgeist and brings her own unique perspective to it. Dear Future Me gives us everything – love, loss, angst and relief. I can’t wait to see to what heights it takes her career.

Dear Future Me is out now on all major streaming platforms and you can check it out below.
