Jovi Skyler is a punk rock artist based in Sydney, Australia who has just come to my attention through his new EP Call It A Day.

Jovi has spent much of his life dedicated to music, even studying it formally for some time. He has also lived his life, travelling in Europe, gigging and generally making the most of his youth. The result is an irresistible sound that feels both technically adept and full of the human experience.

Call It A Day is his second EP release, following his 2020 self-titled debut. In between, he’s released a string of singles and a 2023 full-length called Nothing To Do. With each new record his sound and confidence develops and Call It A Day might just be the best we’ve heard from him.

Over four tracks, we experience Jovi’s life, starting with raw and jangly album opener Asshole. In many ways, it’s grunge rock but there’s something unique about the way it incorporates pop elements. The lyrics are confessional, especially during a memorable chorus. The track comes complete with a self-edited and produced video which showcases his DIY approach.

Lil’ Bo Weep follows with some rumbling bass and garage rock sentiments. It’s a track that encourages you to throw yourself around. Frankenstein slows things down with a stripped-back and reflective number. Rumble wraps things up with a lively and cathartic moment with a punchy and memorable chorus.

Jovi Skyler’s approach to music feels freeing. With a strong foundation in music and a good knowledge of what makes a good rock song, he’s able to push the envelope, giving us plenty of twists and turns in his new EP. I’m so glad to have discovered his music over here on the other side of the world.
