Discovery: Kato The Younger

Kato The Younger is an American pop artist who has just come to my attention through his latest single release. All about the self-justification that can happen when staying in a toxic relationship, it’s called How Can I Let You Go.

The solo project of California-based Kenny Kato, Kato the Younger was started during a tumultuous time in Kenny’s life. Studying Economics in Austin, Texas, he rediscovered his love for music while isolating in the pandemic. The music he wrote then eventually found the light of day last year, and Kenny is planning many more singles for 2024.

How Can I Let You Go is a wonderful introduction to his sound. It opens bright and jangly, with more than a hint of ’90s and ’00s nostalgia about it. Tempering the upbeat instrumental is melancholic and introspective lyrics, beautifully delivered through Kenny’s emotive vocals, especially during a passionate and cathartic chorus.

The track was recorded at the home studio of Dominic Meneses. You can give it a listen below.
