EP Review: Hayden Everett – I Miss The Sky

Hayden Everett is a singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and producer based in California, USA who has just come to my attention through his latest EP, I Miss The Sky.

By Graeme Smith

Describing himself as a free spirit, Hayden believes his songs to come from nature itself, something that’s unmistakably felt on his new EP. It’s a collection that preaches mindfulness and being in the moment, something that’s increasingly difficult to achieve in a world of distractions, but well worth it when we can. Hayden hopes, in some small way, I Miss The Sky will help you get there.

His first release came in 2019 and since then his music has featured on US TV programme Grey’s Anatomy and he’s achieved millions of streams on Spotify, so clearly there are plenty out there attuned to his brand of eclectic folk, jazz and indie.

For all the good vibes, though, I Miss The Sky takes on some weighty topics, including a tough relationships, conflict and mental health struggles. We find out a lot about Hayden through this record, starting right from its dreamy and reflective opener See You Soon. His soft vocals deliver lyrics that are steeped in storytelling detail while an approachable yet complex instrumental paints an emotional picture.

Coma strips things back with a lingering moment that grows into a powerful chorus before Seize the Sun brims with reluctant hope. It has a laidback groove that will have you swaying along. Jet Plane sees Hayden pay tribute to the John Denver classic Leaving On a Jet Plane with a chilled cover. 7th Street is a gentle, piano-led number that pours seamlessly into For Winter. The latter closes the EP with Hayden’s sound at its most vulnerable.

As soundtracks for quiet, introspective moments go, I Miss The Sky is right up there. Help yourself to a beverage of choice, pop on your headphones, sit back, and let it wash over you. If you haven’t processed some feelings by the end of it, listen again.

I Miss The Sky is out now in all the usual places and you can check it out below.
